Remember, in His Word, God has:

  • Something to see – what does the text say
  • Something to understand – what does it mean
  • Something to apply – what does it mean to me
  • Something to praise – for what are you thankful?

(1) Through the Bible

Day 1: 1 Chronicles 11, 12Day 4: 1 Chronicles 17, 18
Day 2: 1 Chronicles 13, 14Day 5: 1 Chronicles 19, 20
Day 3: 1 Chronicles 15, 16Day 6: 1 Chronicles 21, 22

We plan on ministering to you from 1 Samuel 16 this coming week and on Sunday. This chapter marks another transition for Israel. The previous chapter sees the Lord rejecting the nation’s king, Saul. The Lord’s prophet Samuel tells him bluntly, “Because you rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.(15:26)” Saul disobeyed the Lord, and as a result the kingdom was torn from his hands. Chapter 16 introduces a new head of household, Jesse of Bethlehem, and from his sons will come the one whom Samuel will anoint as a future king of Israel. As you read and reflect on chapter 16 note the important contrasts: Kish (9:1) and Jesse; Saul (9:2) and David; disobedience and obedience; human vs divine perspective (16:7) in God’s choosing, and the role of the Spirit of the Lord vs an evil spirit. In the end, David is the man of the hour, and we will consider the theme of anointing this week.
