This Sunday the preaching theme is Babylon and the judgment of God against the city of man. The text is Revelation 18. This prophetic judgment is not unlike the songs of doom we find in the Old Testament which pronounce judgment on such places as Babylon and Nineveh (examples: Is 13:19-22; Is 34:11-15; Jer 50:39; Zeph 2:13-15). Most consider the “Babylon” of the Book of Revelation to be a proxy for Rome. The structure of chapter 18 can be summarized as the call to the faithful to come out (vv4-5); doom of pride (vv6-8); the lament of kings (9-10); the lament of merchants (11-16); the lament of shipmasters (17-19); joy amidst lament (20); and the final desolation (21-24).
